5 Basic Guidelines in Designing Your Signage

Designing your signage for your business not only requires technical skills but artistic skills, as well. When customers pass by your store, whatever signs you have out there can attract their attention and pay your store a visit.  On the other hand, if your signs are not well-designed, it may not catch their eyes at all, or worse may shoo your customers away.

 

While you can hire a professional to think about how you will present your signage, this is also something that you can do yourself.  With some basic knowledge and a bit of practice, you can achieve an impressive layout for your signs.

 

 

Choose the appropriate colors

 

Colors play an important role especially when it comes to designing your signage.  The right color will help reflect what your business is all about.  Generally speaking, warm colors like red and yellow are associated with food, which is why many food-related businesses use these colors in their logo.  Blue and green, which are cool colors, give a serene mood and are often used by spas, for example.

 

 

Experiment with different fonts

 

Every typeface or font seems to have its own personality, which is also often evident in their name.  Comic Sans, for example, looks very informal and a little childish.  Times New Roman, meanwhile, sounds and even looks classic.  Designing your signage entails selecting the kind of font that mirrors the nature of your business and how you want people to perceive your brand.

 

 

Be mindful of your composition

 

Rule of thirds is one of the popular principles in composition.  This simply means that you divide the area you’re working on into three equal parts horizontally and vertically, and then place the important visual elements on the points where the lines intersect.  From studies, these areas automatically draw the attention of the viewer. 

 

 

Choose elements carefully

 

This may be a cliché, but it is true: Less is more.  Throwing in too many elements mindlessly into your design may result in a cluttered layout.  Every swirl, dot, or dash you put in your sign should be an absolute necessity.  The most important thing to note in designing your signage is that every element should lead your customers to what you’re pointing out in your sign.

 

 

Conduct a mini-survey

 

It’s best to create two versions of your signage.  This way, you can compare them and see which items work and which do not.  Getting opinion from your friends, and even better from your target market, will help you decide on the final design or layout.

 

As you have learned, designing your signage does not require you to spend money.  If drawing or using illustration software is not your forte, you can ask help from a friend who is familiar or skilled in these areas.  Simply share to him what your vision is for your signage and give him some specific details like your preferred color or even font.  The important thing is you do know what you want for your signage
